According to The Jonstown Compendium, #35,177.
"The Balkoth used to be the best traders, but now they are the ‘Goatsuckers.’ Once considered rich
despite their marginal lands, now they are obviously poor, without cattle, sheep, or horses. The Lunars took
all of their livestock and replaced them with goats, which the Balkoth now herd despite the normal hatred
Heortlings have for that unclean animal. Their King is Angtyr of the Horn, said to be as randy as the goats
his people tend."
The Dunmantle.
No self-respecting Balkoth, man, woman or child, would be seen outside of their stead without donning the brown scarf and hood that marks them out among the tribes. These have their origins in garments used to protect the wearer from the frequent heat and aridity of the Yellow Hills, not the mention the ferocity of the Urox Storm that hits the tribal lands with a power virtually unknown throughout the rest of Dragon Pass. To the casual observer all dunmantles appear to be the same, but this is not so. Each clan adopts a slightly different form, varying in length, width or shape. Each bloodline has a subtly different pattern of markings or fringe. Each individual has different embroidered patterns, symbols and runes, in a variety of colours and threads. The skilled observer can ‘read’ the dunmantle and discern much about the individual - not just their clan, bloodline and cult, but even something of their life story.
It might conceal the identity when the Balkoth meets an outsider, but serves as a mark of honour and distinction within the tribe and is worn with pride. (It also serves a useful function as a pledge in payment of ransom, or a powerful symbol of exile and punishment).
