Markalor Ringmaker
Clan Penbal, 1355-1368
Markalor Penbaling, a thane of the Penbal clan, was already an old man when
the Daldari clan arrived in the Yellow Hills, but saw the opportunities for working
together with the neighbouring Fimburos and the new arrivals. In 1355 Markalor
forged the Tribal Ring of the Balkoth Clan, named after a common ancestor hero.
He died surrounded by family and friends at a ripe old age.
Kestald Bisonbane
Clan Daldari, 1382-1394
Kestald of the Daldari clan was Dunarl Nameless’ weaponthane, who defeated
the nomads, drove off land-hungry neighbours and migrating clans and built up
the power of the housecarls. A fine warrior, he also possessed a measure of skill
in foreign languages, and could sing better than any man of his clan. He was
always ready to head his men into battle, and died of a wound he received while
pursuing broo raiders near Kestald’s End.
Robasart Ironhelm
Clan Unstralos, 1405-1424: 19 years
The first tribal ruler from the Untralos, Robasart was a staunch supporter of the
people who would later become the Pol Joni as they moved into Prax. A proud
warrior and shrewd operator Robasart’s policy stemmed partly from his love of
war and dislike for the animal nomads, and partly from the political wisdom of
ensuring that the newly arriving group did not do what his clan had done on
their arrival in the Yellow Hills and steal lands from the existing tribes! He forged
a close alliance with them that bore fruit in later years to the benefit of both
the tribe and the Swenstown Confederation.
Orlgandos Rockheart
Clan Daldari, 1442-1448: 6 years
Orlgandos, a noted warrior, was a stern king, just in all his doings, but never letting his feelings show upon his face. He never laughed, and he never cried. When the White Plague struck the Daldari he did all he could to assist his clan, but contracted the disease and died. As he never visited the clan lands during the plague no-one knows how he come to contract it. He died unflinching, despite the cruelness of the disease.
Yerestos the Newt
Clan Fimburos, 1484-1489: 5 years
A scholar by inclination, Yerestos was one of those individuals who seem fated
to always make wrong decisions. Everything he did turned out wrong. His raids
against the nomads cost lives and lands. He opposed the plans of one of his
thanes for a city, so Swen Leapfoot invited a Stranger named Sartar to sort it
out instead, and Yerestos didn’t like him either. Swenstown was founded
anyway. After five miserable years (for himself rather than the Balkoth, who in
general who all found it all rather amusing) Yerestos abdicated to pursue a far
more successful career in Jonstown as an indexer at the Lhankhor Mhy Temple.
Dangmag the Good
Clan Fimburos, 1563-1568: 5 years
Dangmag and Dangmar were twin brothers, Dangmag being older by a few
minutes. He was a popular and well-loved leader, who defended the borders of
the tribe against the depredations of the Praxians. He was killed defending
Pimper's Block during the Great Raid of that year.
Leik Swordbreaker
Clan Penbal, 1594-1613
A shrewd peacemaker to some, and "Gutlack" to Sartar loyalists, Leik was king
when the Lunars conquered Sartar. He forbade his warriors to oppose the
Lunars, or actively support their enemies, on several occasions, although some
went anyway. He died under suspicious circumstances (eating bad mutton)in 1617.
Orlkarl Falsestorm
Clan Daldari, 1613: 2 months)
Sometimes called "Sheepbane" by Orlanthi loyalists, Orlkarl was freely selected
as Leik’s successor after his death. (While it cannot be proven, most Balkoth
believe Orlkarl to have been put in place as a result of a conspiracy among the
anti-Lunar majority among the Daldari and Untralos clans). It was under Orlkarl
that protests grew over the treatment of the tribe, which never quite reached
the point of open conflict. In retaliation the Lunars deprived them of their sheep.
He, and much of the Balkoth Tribal ring, disappeared amidst rumours of
assassination and skulduggery. Orlkarl’s body has ever been found.
Angtyr of the Horn
Clan Penbal, 1613 to present
Angtyr was one of the few of the Balkoth tribe who might pass for a noble, and
contrived to be taken away as a hostage in the years following the conquest of
Sartar. He has willingly embraced Lunar ways, especially the most dissolute, and
follows the way of Gerendetho – "a goat-king for a goat-people" is the phrase
on the lips of the Lunar overlords. Angtyr possess a silver horn, after the
pattern of a ram’s horn. It is a powerful talisman, ensuring the favour of
Gerendetho for the wearer and his people. This item is a focus for powerful
magic to ensure the fertility of the tribe's herds of goats, as well as boosting the
libido of Angtyr, who maintains a most un-Orlanthi collection of concubines.
